Chapter 17
Fionn
When I woke in the dark with Kiernan curled up against my back, I could have wept. He was here. We were together. I knew it was temporary. In a nineday or so, I would have to return to the Eyrie, and he would have to stay in the forest.
But in the meantime, we were together, even if we had to be careful. I didnât know what would happen if my King learned I had disobeyed him, that I had lied to him, and had gone straight to Kiernan. It was against Vogel law for me to be with Kiernan, and while I might be the only, precious bird folk Seer, I was not above the law.
Nor should I be above the law, because no law was much use if it only applied to less important people. But it was a stupid law, and I didnât care if I broke it; I hoped many people were breaking it.
I tried not to think about how soon I would have to go back to being my Kingâs good little Seer; there was so much I wanted to tell Kiernan, and so little time to do it in. And my body didnât want to talk, it wanted to kiss him, to touch him, to feel him inside me. I wanted us to take as much pleasure in each other as we could.
When I sat up in bed and he lay next to me, smiled as much with his deep green eyes as with his lips, it was all I could do not to lean over and put my mouth on him. But I resisted. If we were truly going to mean anything to each other, we needed talking as much as fucking.
He listened while I told him about the Vogel Princess falling ill with fever, and he took my hand when my voice broke as I told him how she wasted away and nearly died, and there had been nothing I could do. He smiled when I got so excited about the salt-leaf and the treatment that had finally saved her that I started babbling and probably making no sense. And he asked careful questions that helped me explain better, and good questions that made me think. I wished he had been in the Eyrie while I was puzzling out the fever cure, because with him to ask the right questions, I might have found the answers sooner.
I told him about my visions, too, of us in the future, as old men, and his face went soft and dreamy, like he was imagining that far off time. His eyes shone when I told him we had been in our own house, sitting in front of our own fire, and the way he smiled made my heart so full I felt I might burst. I felt like I could surely defeat his Queenâs magic with only the strength of my love.
But life is not a fairy tale, no matter how it sometimes felt like one, and I could not kiss him and break the spellwork.
